Listen to opening track ‘Cities of Glass’:

Here is the official announcement:

‘Leaves – The Colour of Falling’ out Nov 4th

Following 16 sold-out shows of their explorative opera ‘Leaves – The Colour of Falling’ back in the summer of 2015, Efterklang are back with the opera’s official release; a genre-breaking collection of tracks composed in collaboration with the award winning composer Karsten Fundal, released November 4th on Tambourhinoceros.

‘Leaves – The Colour of Falling’ is Efterklang’s first release since they declared they were taking a break to reflect on their artistic practice and redefine their expression back in 2014.

Ahead of the release the band are streaming opening track ‘Cities of Glass’. Starting off lightly in a tonal and rhythmical language resembling the likes of Phillip Glass and Steve Reich, the track grows into an intense and dark expression. Featuring the album’s five different vocalists and array of vocal expressions, the track gives a taste of the work as a whole. Stream ‘Cities of Glass’ here:

Alongside the release Efterklang will be performing ‘Leaves – The Colour of Falling’ (in a concert version) with The Happy Hopeless Orchestra at selected European dates through February and March 2017:

Feb 22 – Copenhagen, Store Vega, Denmark
Feb 23 – Uppsala, Uppsala Konsert & Kongress, Sweden
Mar 02 – Eindhoven, Muziekgebouw Eindhoven / Cross Linx – Holland
Mar 03 – Groningen, De Oosterpoort / Cross Linx – Holland
Mar 04 – Rotterdam, De Doelen / Cross Linx – Holland
Mar 05 – Amsterdam, Muziekgebouw / Cross Linx – Holland
Mar 09 – London, Barbican – England
Mar 10 – Brussels, Ancienne Belgique – Belgium

Efterklang have carved a path as one of the most successful and progressive Danish bands, constantly trying to evolve through every record and seeking new grounds with their music. They have played in the Sydney Opera House, made films with Vincent Moon, created a sound installation in the famous restaurant Noma and performed the opera ‘Leaves – The Colour of Falling’ as part of the Copenhagen Opera Festival.

* * * * *

In the summer of 2015 ‘Leaves – The Colour of Falling’ was performed at 16 sold out nights in the 1000 m2 nuclear basement of the former Copenhagen Municipal Hospital. The opera was commissioned by Copenhagen Opera Festival who produced it in collaboration with the local theatre Sort/Hvid. The scenography was made by Marie Rosendahl Chemnitz and it was staged by Christian Lollike. The result was 16 horrifying, fascinating and mysterious evenings received by an enthusiastic audience and with great reviews to follow. The set-up in the basement can never be remade, but the opera will be granted new life with this release and the coming concerts with Efterklang & The Happy Hopeless Orchestra.

The lyrics for ‘Leaves – The Colour of Falling’ are written by the poet Ursula Andkjær Olsen and transformed into a musical piece by Efterklang and Karsten Fundal. Together they have experimented with musical tradition from both the rhythmical and classical world. This release shows you a way into the exciting world of opera as well as challenging the genre and the discography of Efterklang and Fundal.

The 10 tracks of the release span around 1 hour, and do not follow the traditional linear configuration of an opera. Karsten Fundal explains his thoughts on Leaves:

“We wanted to break down the conventions of the opera as a genre. The result is a song cycle about a cult located beneath the ground while the earth might be experiencing its downfall above ground. It’s about loss – loss of identity, loss of love and loss of life itself. We wanted to create an opera for the mood you’re put in when you on a beautiful autumn day see how a brown leaf falls from a tree in the garden – the beautiful swaying fall signifying that everything will perish.”

‘Leaves – The Colour of Falling’ features appearances from the legendary danish opera star Lisbeth Balslev, the countertenor Morten Grove Frandsen (one of Denmark’s most promising opera talents), Nicolai Elsberg (known for his formidable bass), and Katinka Fogh Vindelev (who has been touring with Efterklang for many years).

‘Leaves – The Colour of Falling’ was recorded by Francesco Donadello and Michael Bojesen was the conductor during the recordings.

WATCH: Efterklang Live at Route du Rock

August 29, 2013 by Rasmus

A few weeks back we played at the lovely French festival La Route du Rock in Saint-Malo. French TV was there and made a nice recording (audio and film). You can watch the concert if you click the photo below or here.

We will continue to tour throughout the year, but not as intensely as we have done in the first 8 months. We have shows coming up in England, Aarhus, The Netherlands, Hamburg, France and a longer Irish and UK tour in October. In November we will travel east. First in Europe and then in Asia – this tour will soon be announced.

Please check for an update on upcoming shows.

Efterklang and the Tiny Desk Concert

April 10, 2013 by Rasmus

We like the folks at NPR Music and All Songs Considered so when Bob Boilen invited us to do a Tiny Desk Concert at the NPR building in Washington, DC we happily said: Yes Please!

We even decided to perform a new song called Danish Design. It is a song originating from our process with making the Piramida album. We recently finished it and we like this song. Hope you will like it too.

This is what Bob Boilen from NPR Music / All Songs Considered wrote about this session:
Bands with big ideas work well at the Tiny Desk. Efterklang is a Danish group whose recent album Piramida took its members to an abandoned mining town between the North Pole and Norway. There, they recorded sounds of empty oil tanks, old pianos and pretty much anything they could strike or record.

It’s precisely that creative energy that led to Efterklang ransacking our kitchen utensils and desks in search of sound-making material. The band is a joy to witness live with a small orchestra, but it’s equally compelling just the way it is here, huddled around my desk and trying ideas it’s never tried. A true adventure. –BOB BOILEN

PIRAMIDA is released today in Europe, Asia, Oceania and tomorrow also in North America!

We hope you will be interested in listening to our album. There are many ways to do so. It is on iTunes and other digital sites, and also Spotify and other streaming sites. You can purchase these in any decent record store and also via our own webshop.

We are all currently in New York and we are still beaming from Saturday’s sold out concert at The Metropolitan Museum of Art with The Wordless Music Orchestra. An unforgettable night. We recommend this photo report btw – really nice photos. There is also a very nice review in todays New York Times.

We are in NYC until Wednesday and today we are happy to announce two surprise events. They are a lot more low key than our orchestra concert, but we are sure we´ll have fun.

We’re Looking for a Singer and a Drummer for our Live-Band [UPDATED]

July 10, 2012 by Rasmus

[UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE - July 14] We have received so many emails (thank you!!) and can´t handle anymore. Please only get in touch if you are the new Whitney Houston (with a taste for Ligety) or if you are a girl drummer (with groove).

We are looking for a female singer to join our live-band. We are looking for someone in Berlin who is a trained singer and can sing soulful rock stuff like Talking Heads and who also can sing classical music style like Arvo Pärt for example. The soulful element is however the most important.

We will have auditions in Berlin August 2nd & 3rd. If you are interested then please write us at contact [at]

We are also looking for a drummer. Most of this year we are very fortunate to be playing with Budgie, but he can’t tour with us from December and onwards. If you play the drums, then get in touch. Auditions will be same days as auditions for singers.

The video here gives a good impression of what we are looking for. Enjoy! and Thank You!

Efterklang on Daytrotter

January 28, 2012 by Rasmus

This is old news if you follow Daytrotter regularly, but if you don´t then you should know that Daytrotter recently aired a session with Efterklang.

We recorded this live directly to tape at Big Orange Studios in Austin, Texas, back in September 2010. At that time we had just finished filming An Island with Vincent Moon and was now touring the US with our 7-piece band featuring Peter Broderick, Heather Woods Broderick and Daniel James (of Canon Blue).

In the session that has aired you can hear us perform Frida Found a Friend, I Was Playing Drums, Modern Drift and Step Aside.

Listen to the session here:!/concert/efterklang

P.S. Do you remember our chord project from that same tour? One of them was made in the same studio – link
